ThemostthoroughgoingasceticcouldfeelthathehadanaturalrighttowanderonEgdon—hewaskeepingwithinthelineoflegitimateindulgencewhenhelaidhimselfopentoinfluencessuchasthese.Coloursandbeautiessofarsubduedwere,atleast,thebirthrightofall.Onlyinsummerdaysofhighestfeatherdiditsmoodtouchthelevelofgaiety.
