           Onemorning,afterasevererstrainthanusual,heawokewithastrangesensationinhiseyes.Thesunwasshiningdirectlyuponthewindow-blind,andathisfirstglancethitherwardasharppainobligedhimtoclosehiseyelidsquickly.Ateverynewattempttolookabouthimthesamemorbidsensibilitytolightwasmanifested,andexcoriatingtearsrandownhischeeks.Hewasobligedtotieabandageoverhisbrowwhiledressing;andduringthedayitcouldnotbeabandoned.Eustaciawasthoroughlyalarmed.OnfindingthatthecasewasnobetterthenextmorningtheydecidedtosendtoAngleburyforasurgeon.

           Oneweekandanotherweekworeon,andnothingseemedtolightenthegloomoftheyoungcouple.DreadfulimaginingsoccurredtoEustacia,butshecarefullyrefrainedfromutteringthemtoherhusband.
