           Theenterprisingladyfollowedthemummingcompanythroughthegateinthewhitepaling,andstoodbeforetheopenporch.Thehousewasencrustedwithheavythatchings,whichdroppedbetweentheupperwindows;thefront,uponwhichthemoonbeamsdirectlyplayed,hadoriginallybeenwhite;butahugepyracanthnowdarkenedthegreaterportion.

           Itbecameatonceevidentthatthedancewasproceedingimmediatelywithinthesurfaceofthedoor,noapartmentintervening.Thebrushingofskirtsandelbows,sometimesthebumpingofshoulders,couldbeheardagainsttheverypanels.Eustacia,thoughlivingwithintwomilesoftheplace,hadneverseentheinteriorofthisquaintoldhabitation.BetweenCaptainVyeandtheYeobrightstherehadneverexistedmuchacquaintance,theformerhavingcomeasastrangerandpurchasedthelong-emptyhouseatMistoverKnapnotlongbeforethedeathofMrs.Yeobright’shusband;andwiththateventandthedepartureofhersonsuchfriendshipashadgrownupbecamequitebrokenoff.

           “Istherenopassageinsidethedoor,then?”askedEustaciaastheystoodwithintheporch.

           “No,”saidtheladwhoplayedtheSaracen.“Thedooropensrightuponthefrontsitting-room,wherethespree’sgoingon.”

           “Sothatwecannotopenthedoorwithoutstoppingthedance.”

           “That’sit.Herewemustbidetilltheyhavedone,fortheyalwaysboltthebackdoorafterdark.”

           “Theywon’tbemuchlonger,”saidFatherChristmas.

           Thisassertion,however,washardlyborneoutbytheevent.
