           Whilethemenandladswerebuildingthepile,achangetookplaceinthemassofshadewhichdenotedthedistantlandscape.Redsunsandtuftsoffireonebyonebegantoarise,fleckingthewholecountryround.Theywerethebonfiresofotherparishesandhamletsthatwereengagedinthesamesortofcommemoration.Someweredistant,andstoodinadenseatmosphere,sothatbundlesofpalestraw-likebeamsradiatedaroundthemintheshapeofafan.Somewerelargeandnear,glowingscarlet-redfromtheshade,likewoundsinablackhide.SomewereMaenades,withwinyfacesandblownhair.Thesetincturedthesilentbosomofthecloudsabovethemandlituptheirephemeralcaves,whichseemedthenceforthtobecomescaldingcaldrons.Perhapsasmanyasthirtybonfirescouldbecountedwithinthewholeboundsofthedistrict;andasthehourmaybetoldonaclock-facewhenthefiguresthemselvesareinvisible,sodidthemenrecognizethelocalityofeachfirebyitsangleanddirection,thoughnothingofthescenerycouldbeviewed.

           ThefirsttallflamefromRainbarrowsprangintothesky,attractingalleyesthathadbeenfixedonthedistantconflagrationsbacktotheirownattemptinthesamekind.Thecheerfulblazestreakedtheinnersurfaceofthehumancircle—nowincreasedbyotherstragglers,maleandfemale—withitsowngoldlivery,andevenoverlaidthedarkturfaroundwithalivelyluminousness,whichsoftenedoffintoobscuritywherethebarrowroundeddownwardsoutofsight.
