           Eustaciaagainremainedinasortofstupefiedsilence.Whatcuriousfeelingwasthiscomingoverher?WasitreallypossiblethatherinterestinWildevehadbeensoentirelytheresultofantagonismthatthegloryandthedreamdepartedfromthemanwiththefirstsoundthathewasnolongercovetedbyherrival?Shewas,then,secureofhimatlast.Thomasinnolongerrequiredhim.Whatahumiliatingvictory!Helovedherbest,shethought;andyet—daredshetomurmursuchtreacherouscriticismeversosoftly?—whatwasthemanworthwhomawomaninferiortoherselfdidnotvalue?Thesentimentwhichlurksmoreorlessinallanimatenature—thatofnotdesiringtheundesiredofothers—waslivelyasapassioninthesupersubtle,epicureanheartofEustacia.Hersocialsuperiorityoverhim,whichhithertohadscarcelyeverimpressedher,becameunpleasantlyinsistent,andforthefirsttimeshefeltthatshehadstoopedinlovinghim.
