Allsociety—boththeinhabitantsoftheplaceandthosewhocamedownofaneveningforthemusic—hadgotholdofoneandthesamestory,inathousandvarietiesofdetail—astohowacertainyoungprincehadraisedaterriblescandalinamostrespectablehousehold,hadthrownoveradaughterofthefamily,towhomhewasengaged,andhadbeencapturedbyawomanofshadyreputationwhomhewasdeterminedtomarryatonce—breakingoffalloldtiesforthesatisfactionofhisinsaneidea;and,inspiteofthepublicindignationrousedbyhisaction,themarriagewastotakeplaceinPavlofskopenlyandpublicly,andtheprincehadannouncedhisintentionofgoingthroughwithitwithheaderectandlookingthewholeworldintheface.Thestorywassoartfullyadornedwithscandalousdetails,andpersonsofsogreateminenceandimportancewereapparentlymixedupinit,while,atthesametime,theevidencewassocircumstantial,thatitwasnowonderthemattergavefoodforplentyofcuriosityandgossip.
Accordingtothereportsofthemosttalentedgossip-mongers—thosewho,ineveryclassofsociety,arealwaysinhastetoexplaineveryeventtotheirneighbours—theyounggentlemanconcernedwasofgoodfamily—aprince—fairlyrich—weakofintellect,butademocratandadabblerintheNihilismoftheperiod,asexposedbyMr.Turgenieff.HecouldhardlytalkRussian,buthadfalleninlovewithoneoftheMissEpanchins,andhissuitmetwithsomuchencouragementthathehadbeenreceivedinthehouseastherecognizedbridegroom-to-beoftheyounglady.
