           TheangeroftheEpanchinfamilywasunappeasedforthreedays.Asusualtheprincereproachedhimself,andhadexpectedpunishment,buthewasinwardlyconvincedthatLizabethaProkofievnacouldnotbeseriouslyangrywithhim,andthatsheprobablywasmoreangrywithherself.Hewaspainfullysurprised,therefore,whenthreedayspassedwithnowordfromher.Otherthingsalsotroubledandperplexedhim,andoneofthesegrewmoreimportantinhiseyesasthedayswentby.Hehadbeguntoblamehimselffortwooppositetendenciesontheonehandtoextreme,almost“senseless,”confidenceinhisfellows,ontheothertoa“vile,gloomysuspiciousness.”

           BytheendofthethirddaytheincidentoftheeccentricladyandEvgeniePavlovitchhadattainedenormousandmysteriousproportionsinhismind.Hesorrowfullyaskedhimselfwhetherhehadbeenthecauseofthisnew“monstrosity,”orwasit...butherefrainedfromsayingwhoelsemightbeinfault.AsforthelettersN.P.B.,helookedonthatasaharmlessjoke,amerechildishpieceofmischiefsochildishthathefeltitwouldbeshameful,almostdishonourable,toattachanyimportancetoit.

           Thedayafterthesescandalousevents,however,theprincehadthehonourofreceivingavisitfromAdelaidaandherfiance,PrinceS.Theycame,ostensibly,toinquireafterhishealth.
