GeneralEpanchinlivedinhisownhouseneartheLitaynaya.Besidesthislargeresidence—five-sixthsofwhichwasletinflatsandlodgings—thegeneralwasownerofanotherenormoushouseintheSadovayabringinginevenmorerentthanthefirst.Besidesthesehouseshehadadelightfullittleestatejustoutoftown,andsomesortoffactoryinanotherpartofthecity.GeneralEpanchin,aseveryoneknew,hadagooddealtodowithcertaingovernmentmonopolies;hewasalsoavoice,andanimportantone,inmanyrichpubliccompaniesofvariousdescriptions;infact,heenjoyedthereputationofbeingawell-to-domanofbusyhabits,manyties,andaffluentmeans.Hehadmadehimselfindispensableinseveralquarters,amongstothersinhisdepartmentofthegovernment;andyetitwasaknownfactthatFedorIvanovitchEpanchinwasamanofnoeducationwhatever,andhadabsolutelyrisenfromtheranks.
