Forthe“clevercommonplace”person,thoughhemaypossiblyimaginehimselfamanofgeniusandoriginality,nonethelesshaswithinhisheartthedeathlesswormofsuspicionanddoubt;andthisdoubtsometimesbringsaclevermantodespair.(Asarule,however,nothingtragichappens;—hisliverbecomesalittledamagedinthecourseoftime,nothingmoreserious.Suchmendonotgiveuptheiraspirationsafteroriginalitywithoutaseverestruggle,—andtherehavebeenmenwho,thoughgoodfellowsinthemselves,andevenbenefactorstohumanity,havesunktothelevelofbasecriminalsforthesakeoforiginality).
