           ‘Youhavemissedmyletter!’exclaimedMr.Gradgrind,surprisedbytheapparition.

           ‘Missedyourletter,sir!’bawledBounderby.‘Thepresenttimeisnotimeforletters.NomanshalltalktoJosiahBounderbyofCoketownaboutletters,withhismindinthestateit’sinnow.’

           ‘Bounderby,’saidMr.Gradgrind,inatoneoftemperateremonstrance,‘IspeakofaveryspecialletterIhavewrittentoyou,inreferencetoLouisa.’

           ‘TomGradgrind,’repliedBounderby,knockingtheflatofhishandseveraltimeswithgreatvehemenceonthetable,‘Ispeakofaveryspecialmessengerthathascometome,inreferencetoLouisa.Mrs.Sparsit,ma’am,standforward!’

           Thatunfortunateladyhereuponessayingtooffertestimony,withoutanyvoiceandwithpainfulgesturesexpressiveofaninflamedthroat,becamesoaggravatingandunderwentsomanyfacialcontortions,thatMr.Bounderby,unabletobearit,seizedherbythearmandshookher.

           ‘Ifyoucan’tgetitout,ma’am,’saidBounderby,‘leavemetogetitout.Thisisnotatimeforalady,howeverhighlyconnected,tobetotallyinaudible,andseeminglyswallowingmarbles.TomGradgrind,Mrs.Sparsitlatterlyfoundherself,byaccident,inasituationtooverhearaconversationoutofdoorsbetweenyourdaughterandyourpreciousgentleman-friend,Mr.JamesHarthouse.
