Another Thing Needful

           

           Louisaawokefromatorpor,andhereyeslanguidlyopenedonheroldbedathome,andheroldroom.Itseemed,atfirst,asifallthathadhappenedsincethedayswhentheseobjectswerefamiliartoherweretheshadowsofadream,butgradually,astheobjectsbecamemorerealtohersight,theeventsbecamemorerealtohermind.

           Shecouldscarcelymoveherheadforpainandheaviness,hereyeswerestrainedandsore,andshewasveryweak.Acuriouspassiveinattentionhadsuchpossessionofher,thatthepresenceofherlittlesisterintheroomdidnotattracthernoticeforsometime.Evenwhentheireyeshadmet,andhersisterhadapproachedthebed,Louisalayforminuteslookingatherinsilence,andsufferinghertimidlytoholdherpassivehand,beforesheasked:

           ‘WhenwasIbroughttothisroom?’

           ‘Lastnight,Louisa.’

           ‘Whobroughtmehere?’

           ‘Sissy,Ibelieve.’

           ‘Whydoyoubelieveso?’

           ‘BecauseIfoundherherethismorning.Shedidn’tcometomybedsidetowakeme,asshealwaysdoes;andIwenttolookforher.Shewasnotinherownroomeither;andIwentlookingforheralloverthehouse,untilIfoundherheretakingcareofyouandcoolingyourhead.Willyouseefather?SissysaidIwastotellhimwhenyouwoke.’

           ‘Whatabeamingfaceyouhave,Jane!’saidLouisa,asheryoungsistertimidlystillbentdowntokissher.

           ‘HaveI?Iamverygladyouthinkso.IamsureitmustbeSissy’sdoing.’

           ThearmLouisahadbeguntotwinearoundherneck,unbentitself.‘Youcantellfatherifyouwill.
