           ItwasfallingdarkwhenStephencameoutofMr.Bounderby’shouse.Theshadowsofnighthadgatheredsofast,thathedidnotlookabouthimwhenheclosedthedoor,butploddedstraightalongthestreet.Nothingwasfurtherfromhisthoughtsthanthecuriousoldwomanhehadencounteredonhispreviousvisittothesamehouse,whenheheardastepbehindhimthatheknew,andturning,sawherinRachael’scompany.
