           But,Mrs.Sparsitwaswronginhercalculation.Louisagotintonocoach,andwasalreadygone.Theblackeyeskeptupontherailroad-carriageinwhichshehadtravelled,settleduponitamomenttoolate.Thedoornotbeingopenedafterseveralminutes,Mrs.Sparsitpasseditandrepassedit,sawnothing,lookedin,andfounditempty.Wetthroughandthrough:withherfeetsquelchingandsquashinginhershoeswhenevershemoved;witharashofrainuponherclassicalvisage;withabonnetlikeanover-ripefig;withallherclothesspoiled;withdampimpressionsofeverybutton,string,andhook-and-eyeshewore,printedoffuponherhighlyconnectedback;withastagnantverdureonhergeneralexterior,suchasaccumulatesonanoldparkfenceinamouldylane;Mrs.Sparsithadnoresourcebuttoburstintotearsofbitternessandsay,‘Ihavelosther!’
