           ‘Pray,sir,’returnedMrs.Sparsit,reproachfully,‘letmebegyounottosaythat.Yourabsencewillmakeavastdifferencetome,sir,asIthinkyouverywellknow.’

           ‘Well,ma’am,thenyoumustgetoninmyabsenceaswellasyoucan,’saidMr.Bounderby,notdispleased.

           ‘Mr.Bounderby,’retortedMrs.Sparsit,‘yourwillistomealaw,sir;otherwise,itmightbemyinclinationtodisputeyourkindcommands,notfeelingsurethatitwillbequitesoagreeabletoMissGradgrindtoreceiveme,asiteveristoyourownmunificenthospitality.Butyoushallsaynomore,sir.Iwillgo,uponyourinvitation.’

           ‘Why,whenIinviteyoutomyhouse,ma’am,’saidBounderby,openinghiseyes,‘Ishouldhopeyouwantnootherinvitation.’

           ‘No,indeed,sir,’returnedMrs.Sparsit,‘Ishouldhopenot.Saynomore,sir.Iwould,sir,Icouldseeyougayagain.’

           ‘Whatdoyoumean,ma’am?’blusteredBounderby.

           ‘Sir,’rejoinedMrs.Sparsit,‘therewaswonttobeanelasticityinyouwhichIsadlymiss.Bebuoyant,sir!’
