           LongafterLouisahadundressedandlaindown,shewatchedandwaitedforherbrother’scominghome.Thatcouldhardlybe,sheknew,untilanhourpastmidnight;butinthecountrysilence,whichdidanythingbutcalmthetroubleofherthoughts,timelaggedwearily.Atlast,whenthedarknessandstillnesshadseemedforhourstothickenoneanother,sheheardthebellatthegate.Shefeltasthoughshewouldhavebeengladthatitrangonuntildaylight;butitceased,andthecirclesofitslastsoundspreadoutfainterandwiderintheair,andallwasdeadagain.

           Shewaitedyetsomequarterofanhour,asshejudged.Thenshearose,putonalooserobe,andwentoutofherroominthedark,andupthestaircasetoherbrother’sroom.Hisdoorbeingshut,shesoftlyopeneditandspoketohim,approachinghisbedwithanoiselessstep.

           Shekneeleddownbesideit,passedherarmoverhisneck,anddrewhisfacetohers.
