A Whale in Sight

           

           Therewerewhitepetrelshere;there,otherpetrels,whosewingswereembroideredwithbrown.Sometimes,also,companiesofdamierspassed,orsomeofthosepenquinswhosegaitonlandissoheavyandsoridiculous.However,asCaptainHullremarked,thesepenquins,usingtheirstumpsliketruefins,canchallengethemostrapidfishesinswimming,tosuchanextenteven,thatsailorshaveoftenconfoundedthemwithbonitoes.

           Higher,giganticalbatrossesbeattheairwithgreatstrokes,displayinganextentoftenfeetbetweentheextremitiesoftheirwings,andthencametolightonthesurfaceofthewaters,whichtheysearchedwiththeirbeakstogettheirfood.

           Allthesescenesmadeavariedspectacle,thatonlysoulsclosedtothecharmsofnaturewouldhavefoundmonotonous.

           ThatdayMrs.Weldonwaswalkingaftonthe"Pilgrim,"whenarathercuriousphenomenonattractedherattention.Thewatersoftheseahadbecomereddishquitesuddenly.Onemighthavebelievedthattheyhadjustbeenstainedwithblood;andthisinexplicabletingeextendedasfarastheeyecouldreach.

           DickSand.wasthenwithlittleJacknearMrs.Weldon.

           "Dick,"shesaidtotheyoungnovice,"DoyouseethatsingularcolorofthewatersofthePacific?Isitduetothepresenceofamarineherb?"

           "No,Mrs.Weldon,"repliedDickSand,"thattingeisproducedbymyriadsoflittlecrustaceans,whichgenerallyservetonourishthegreatmammifers.Fishermencallthat,notwithoutreason,’whales’food.’"

           "Crustaceans!"saidMrs.Weldon.
