Mrs.Weldon,wifeofthe"Pilgrim’s"owner,wasthenatAucklandwithheryoungsonJack,agedaboutfiveyears,andoneofherrelatives,herCousinBenedict.JamesW.Weldon,whomhisbusinessoperationssometimesobligedtovisitNewZealand,hadbroughtthethreethere,andintendedtobringthembacktoSanFrancisco.
But,justasthewholefamilywasgoingtodepart,littleJackbecameseriouslyill,andhisfather,imperativelyrecalledbyhisbusiness,wasobligedtoleaveAuckland,leavinghiswife,hisson,andCousinBenedictthere.
Threemonthshadpassedaway—threelongmonthsofseparation,whichwereextremelypainfultoMrs.Weldon.Meanwhileheryoungchildwasrestoredtohealth,andshewasatlibertytodepart,whenshewasinformedofthearrivalofthe"Pilgrim."
