Duringthetendaysthattheshipwreckeddoghadpassedonthe"Waldeck,"ithadkeptatadistance,feedingitself,theyknewnothow,buthavingalsosufferedcruellyfromthirst.
Such,then,werethesurvivorsofthiswreck,whichthefirstsurgeoftheseawouldsubmerge.Nodoubtitwouldhavecarriedonlydeadbodiesintothedepthsoftheoceaniftheunexpectedarrivalofthe"Pilgrim,"herselfkeptbackbycalmsandcontrarywinds,hadnotpermittedCaptainHulltodoaworkofhumanity.
Thisworkhadonlytobecompletedbybringingbacktotheircountrytheshipwreckedmenfromthe"Waldeck,"who,inthisshipwreck,hadlosttheirsavingsofthreeyearsoflabor.Thisiswhatwasgoingtobedone.The"Pilgrim,"afterhavingeffectedherunloadingatValparaiso,wouldascendtheAmericancoastasfarasCalifornia.ThereTomandhiscompanionswouldbewellreceivedbyJamesW.Weldon—hisgenerouswifeassuredthemofit—andtheywouldbeprovidedwithallthatwouldbenecessaryforthemtoreturntotheStateofPennsylvania.
Thesehonestmen,reassuredaboutthefuture,hadonlytothankMrs.WeldonandCaptainHull.Certainlytheyowedthemagreatdeal,andalthoughtheywereonlypoornegroes,perhaps,theydidnotdespairofsomedaypayingthisdebtofgratitude.
