Theotherblackswereyoungmenfromtwenty-fivetothirtyyearsold,whosenameswereBat(abbreviationofBartholomew),sonofoldTom,Austin,Acteon,andHercules,allfourwellmadeandvigorous,andwhowouldbringahighpriceinthemarketsofCentralAfrica.Eventhoughtheyhadsufferedterribly,onecouldeasilyrecognizeinthemmagnificentspecimensofthatstrongrace,onwhichaliberaleducation,drawnfromthenumerousschoolsofNorthAmerica,hadalreadyimpresseditsseal.
Tomandhiscompanionsthenfoundthemselvesaloneonthe"Waldeck"afterthecollision,havingnomeansofraisingthatinerthull,withoutevenpowertoleaveit,becausethetwoboatsonboardhadbeenshatteredintheboarding.Theywerereducedtowaitingforthepassageofaship,whilethewreckdriftedlittlebylittleundertheactionofthecurrents.
