           Eachdaythecaravansetoutatdaybreak,andonlyhaltedatmiddayforanhour.Somepackscontainingtapiocawerethenopened,andthisfoodwasparsimoniouslydistributedtotheslaves.Tothispotatoeswereadded,orgoat’smeatandveal,whenthesoldiershadpillagedsomevillageinpassing.Butthefatiguehadbeensuch,thereposesoinsufficient,soimpossibleevenduringtheserainynights,thatwhenthehourforthedistributionoffoodarrivedtheprisonerscouldhardlyeat.So,eightdaysafterthedeparturefromtheCoanza,twentyhadfallenbytheway,atthemercyofthebeaststhatprowledbehindtheconvoy.Lions,panthersandleopardswaitedforthevictimswhichcouldnotfailthem,andeacheveningaftersunsettheirroaringsoundedatsuchashortdistancethatonemightfearadirectattack.

           Onhearingthoseroars,renderedmoreformidablebythedarkness,DickSandthoughtwithterroroftheobstaclessuchencounterswouldpresentagainstHercules’senterprise,oftheperilsthatmenacedeachofhissteps.Andmeanwhileifhehimselfshouldfindanopportunitytoflee,hewouldnothesitate.
