           DickSandhadbeenplacedalmostintherearoftheconvoy.HecouldneitherperceiveTom,norhiscompanions,norNan.Theheadofthelongcaravanwasonlyvisibletohimwhenitwascrossingsomeplain.Hewalked,aprey,tothesaddestthoughts,fromwhichtheagents’crieshardlydrewhisattention.Heneitherthoughtofhimself,northefatigueshemuststillsupport,norofthetorturesprobablyreservedforhimbyNegoro.HeonlythoughtofMrs.Weldon.
