CousinBenedictwassomuchsurprisedattheabandonment,thatheatonceconsideredthereasonforit,andhewassoonconvincedthattheemigrationhadbeenrecent.
Infact,hedidnotwait,but,descendingtothelowerpartofthecone,andtakingthelantern,hecommencedtoexaminethemostsecretcornersoftheant-hill.Hethusdiscoveredwhatiscalledthe"generalstore-house"ofthetermites,thatistosay,theplacewheretheseindustriousinsectslayuptheprovisionsofthecolony.
Itwasacavityhollowedinthewall,notfarfromtheroyalcell,whichHercules’slaborhaddestroyed,alongwiththecellsdestinedfortheyounglarvae.
Inthisstore-roomCousinBenedictcollectedacertainquantityofparticlesofgumandthejuicesofplants,scarcelysolidified,whichprovedthatthetermiteshadlatelybroughtthemfromwithout.
