           DickSand,accompaniedbyBatandAustin,climbedintotheriggingoftheforemast,andsucceeded,notwithouttrouble,intakinginthetop-sail.Inlessthreateningweatherhewouldhaveleftthetwoyardsonthemast,but,foreseeingthathewouldprobablybeobligedtolevelthatmast,andperhapseventolayitdownuponthedeck,heunriggedthetwoyardsandsentthemtothedeck.Infact,itisunderstoodthatwhenthewindbecomestoostrong,notonlymustthesailsbediminished,butalsothemasting.Thatisagreatrelieftotheship,which,carryinglessweightabove,isnolongersomuchstrainedwiththerollingandpitching.

           ThisfirstworkaccomplishedandittooktwohoursDickSandandhiscompanionswerebusyreducingthesurfaceofthetop-sail,bytakingintworeefs.The"Pilgrim"didnotcarry,likethemajorityofmodernships,adoubletop-sail,whichfacilitatestheoperation.Itwasnecessary,then,toworkasformerlythatistosay,torunoutonthefoot-ropes,pulltowardyouasailbeatenbythewind,andlashitfirmlywithitsreef-lines.Itwasdifficult,long,perilous;but,finally,thediminishedtop-sailgavelesssurfacetothewind,andtheschoonerwasmuchrelieved.

           DickSandcamedownagainwithBatandAustin.The"Pilgrim"wastheninthesailingconditiondemandedbythatstateoftheatmospherewhichhasbeenqualifiedas"verystiff."

           Duringthethreedayswhichfollowed,20th,21stand22dofFebruary,theforceanddirectionofthewindwerenotperceptiblychanged.
