           Sopassedlifeonboard.Theblacksdidtheirworkintelligently,andeachdaybecamemoreskilfulinthesailor’scraft.Tomwasnaturallytheboatswain,anditwashe,indeed,whomhiscompanionswouldhavechosenforthatoffice.Hecommandedthewatchwhilethenovicerested,andhehadwithhimhissonBatandAustin.ActeonandHerculesformedtheotherwatch,underDickSand’sdirection.Bythismeans,whileonesteered,theotherswatchedattheprow.

           Eventhoughthesepartsweredeserted,andnocollisionwasreallytobefeared,thenoviceexactedarigorouswatchduringthenight.Heneversailedwithouthavinghislightsinpositionagreenlightonthestarboard,aredlightonthelarboardandinthatheactedwisely.

           Allthetime,duringthosenightswhichDickSandpassedentirelyatthehelm,heoccasionallyfeltanirresistibleheavinessoverhim.Hishandthensteeredbypureinstinct.Itwastheeffectofafatigueofwhichhedidnotwishtotakeaccount.
