           DickSandhadfinishedhistask,andseizingoneofthestarboardbackstays,heslidtothedeck.

           The"Pilgrim"thencarriedallthesailsthatcomposedherrigging.DoubtlessDickSandcouldstilladdtheforemaststudding-sailstolarboard,butitwasdifficultworkunderthepresentcircumstances,andshoulditbenecessarytotakethemin,incaseofasquall,itcouldnotbedonefastenough.Sothenovicestoppedthere.

           Tomwasrelievedfromhispostatthewheel,whichDickSandtookchargeofagain.

           Thebreezefreshened.The"Pilgrim,"makingaslightturntostarboard,glidedrapidlyoverthesurfaceofthesea,leavingbehindheraveryflattrack,whichborewitnesstothepurityofherwater-line.

           "Wearewellunderway,Mrs.Weldon,"thensaidDickSand,"and,now,mayGodpreservethisfavorablewind!"

           Mrs.Weldonpressedtheyoungman’shand.Then,fatiguedwithalltheemotionsofthatlasthour,shesoughthercabin,andfellintoasortofpainfuldrowsiness,whichwasnotsleep.

           Thenewcrewremainedontheschooner’sdeck,watchingontheforecastle,andreadytoobeyDickSand’sordersthatistosay,tochangethesetofthesailsaccordingtothevariationsofthewind;butsolongasthebreezekeptboththatforceandthatdirection,therewouldbepositivelynothingtodo.
