           Andthewholebreadthoftheforemast,whoselarboardbraceshadbeenloosened,turnedslowly.Thewindthenswellingthesailsimpartedacertainspeedtotheship.

           DickSandthenhadthejibsheet-ropesloosened.Thenhecalledtheblacksaft:

           "Beholdwhatisdone,myfriends,andwelldone.Nowletusattendtothemainmast.Butbreaknothing,Hercules."

           "Ishalltry,"repliedthecolossus,withoutbeingwillingtopromisemore.

           Thissecondoperationwasquiteeasy.Themain-boomsheet-ropehavingbeenletgogently,thebrigantinetookthewindmoreregularly,andaddeditspowerfulactiontothatoftheforwardsails.

           Thefore-staffwasthensetabovethebrigantine,and,asitissimplybrailedup,therewasnothingtodobutbearontherope,tohaulaboard,thentosecureit.ButHerculespulledsohard,alongwithhisfriendActeon,withoutcountinglittleJack,whohadjoinedthem,thattheropebrokeoff.

           Allthreefellbackwardshappily,withouthurtingthemselves.Jackwasenchanted.

           "That’snothing!that’snothing!"criedthenovice."Fastenthetwoendstogetherforthistimeandhoistsoftly!"

           ThatwasdoneunderDickSand’seyes,whilehehadnotyetleftthehelm.The"Pilgrim"wasalreadysailingrapidly,headedtotheeast,andtherewasnothingmoretobedonebutkeepitinthatdirection.Nothingeasier,becausethewindwasfavorable,andlurcheswerenottobefeared.

           "Good,myfriends!"saidthenovice."Youwillbegoodsailorsbeforetheendofthevoyage!"

           "Weshalldoourbest,CaptainSand,"repliedTom.
