Thed’Urbervilles—orStoke-d’Urbervilles,astheyatfirstcalledthemselves—whoownedallthis,wereasomewhatunusualfamilytofindinsuchanold-fashionedpartofthecountry.ParsonTringhamhadspokentrulywhenhesaidthatourshamblingJohnDurbeyfieldwastheonlyreallylinealrepresentativeoftheoldd’Urbervillefamilyexistinginthecounty,ornearit;hemighthaveadded,whatheknewverywell,thattheStoke-d’Urbervilleswerenomored’Urbervillesofthetruetreethenhewashimself.Yetitmustbeadmittedthatthisfamilyformedaverygoodstockwhereontoregraftanamewhichsadlywantedsuchrenovation.
WhenoldMrSimonStoke,latterlydeceased,hadmadehisfortuneasanhonestmerchant(somesaidmoney-lender)intheNorth,hedecidedtosettleasacountymanintheSouthofEngland,outofhailofhisbusinessdistrict;andindoingthishefeltthenecessityofrecommencingwithanamethatwouldnottooreadilyidentifyhimwiththesmarttradesmanofthepast,andthatwouldbelesscommonplacethantheoriginalbaldstarkwords.ConningforanhourintheBritishMuseumthepagesofworksdevotedtoextinct,half-extinct,obscured,andruinedfamiliesappertainingtothequarterofEnglandinwhichheproposedtosettle,heconsideredthatD’URBERVILLElookedandsoundedaswellasanyofthem:andd’Urbervilleaccordinglywasannexedtohisownnameforhimselfandhisheirseternally.
