           Nocrisis,apparently,hadsupervened;andtherewasnothingleftforhertodobuttocontinueuponthatstarve-acrefarmtillshecouldagainsummoncouragetofacetheVicarage.Shedid,indeed,takesufficientinterestinherselftothrowupherveilonthisreturnjourney,asiftolettheworldseethatshecouldatleastexhibitafacesuchasMercyChantcouldnotshow.Butitwasdonewithasorryshakeofthehead.“Itisnothingitisnothing!”shesaid.“Nobodylovesit;nobodyseesit.Whocaresaboutthelooksofacastawaylikeme!”
