Avisionofmajesticbuildings,vast,statelyandgigantic!——ofstreetscrowdedwithmenandwomeninwhiteandcolouredgarmentsadornedwithjewels—offlowersthatgrewontheroofsofpalacesandswungfromterracetoterraceinloopsandgarlandsoffantasticbloom—oftrees,broad-branchedandfullyleafed—ofmarbleembankmentsoverlookingtheriver—oflotus-liliesgrowingthicklybelow,bythewater’sedge—ofmusicthatechoedinsilverandbrazentwangingsfromtheshelterofshadygardensandcoveredbalconies—everybeautifuldetailrosebeforememoredistinctlythananivorycarvingmountedonanebonyshield.JustoppositewhereIstoodorseemedtostand,onthedeckofavesselinthebusyharbour,awideavenueextended,openingupintohugesquaresembellishedwithstrangefiguresofgranitegodsandanimals—Isawthesparklingsprayofmanyfountainsinthemoonlight,andheardthelowpersistenthumoftherestlesshumanmultitudesthatthrongedtheplaceasthicklyasbeesclusteredinahive.TotheleftofthesceneIcoulddiscernahugebronzegateguardedbysphinxes;therewasagardenbeyondit,andfromthatdepthofshadeagirl’svoice,singingastrangewildmelody,camefloatingtowardsmeonthebreeze.MeanwhilethemarchingmusicIhadfirstofallcaughttheechoof,soundednearerandnearer—andpresentlyIperceivedagreatcrowdapproachingwithlightedtorchesandgarlandsofflowers.
