Buthehastreatedmepreciselyashemighttreatapaidmistress—thatis,hehasfedme,clothedme,andprovidedmewithmoneyandjewelsinreturnformakingmethetoyofhispassions—buthehasnotgivenmeonetouchofsympathy—oneproofofself-denialorhumaneforbearance.Therefore,Iowehimnothing.Andnowhe,andmylovewhowillnotbemylover,havegoneawaytogether;IamfreetodoasIwillwiththissmallpulsewithinmecalledlife,whichisafterall,onlyathread,easilybroken.Thereisnoonetosaymenay,ortoholdmyhandbackfromgivingmyselfthefinalquietus.ItiswellIhavenofriends;itisgoodformethatIhaveprobedthehypocrisyandsocialshamoftheworld,andthatIhavemasteredthefollowinghardtruthsoflife—thatthereisnolovewithoutlust—nofriendshipwithoutself-interest—noreligionwithoutavarice—andnoso-calledvirtuewithoutitsaccompanyingstrongervice.Who,knowingthesethings,wouldcaretotakepartinthem!OnthevergeofthegraveIlookbackalongtheshortvistaofmyyears,andIseemyselfachildinthisveryplace,thiswoodedWillowsmere;IcannotehowthatlifebegantowhichIamabouttoputanend.Pampered,pettedandspoilt,toldthatImust‘lookpretty’andtakepleasureinmyclothes,Iwasevenattheageoften,capableofacertainamountofcoquetry.
