Hedidsointhepresentinstance,andIwasplacedintheoddpositionofhavingtoentertaincertainpeoplewhomIhadnevermetbefore,andwho,withthequestionabletastefrequentlyexhibitedamongthe‘upperten,’lookeduponmemerelyas"themanwiththemillions,"thecatererfortheirprovisions,andnomore—directingtheirchiefattentiontoSibyl,whowasbyvirtueofherbirthandassociationsoneoftheir‘set,’andpushingme,theirhost,moreorlessintothebackground.HoweverthegloryofentertainingRoyaltymorethansufficedformypoorprideatthattime,andwithlessself-respectthananhonestcur,Iwascontenttobesnubbedandharassedandworriedahundredtimesadaybyoneortheotherofthe‘great’personageswhowanderedatwillallovermyhouseandgrounds,andacceptedmylavishhospitality.Manypeopleimaginethatitmustbean‘honour’toentertainaselectpartyofaristocrats,butI,onthecontrary,considerthatitisnotonlyadegradationtoone’smanlierandmoreindependentinstincts,butalsoabore.Thesehighly-bred,highly-connectedindividuals,areforthemostpartunintelligent,anddevoidofresourcesintheirownminds—theyarenotgiftedasconversationalistsorwits—onegainsnointellectualadvantagefromtheirsociety—theyaresimplydullfolk,withanexaggeratedsenseoftheirownimportance,whoexpectwherevertheygo,tobeamusedwithouttroubletothemselves.
