Itisconstantlymademanifesttousintheunexpectedandalmostinstantaneousdownfallofcertainmembersofsocietywhohaveheldtheirheadsproudlyabovetheircompeersandhavepresumedtoposeasexamplesoflightandleadingtothewholecommunity;weseeitinthecapriciousfortunesofkingsandstatesmen,whoareinfavouronedayanddisgracedthenext,andvastchangesarewroughtwithsuchinexplicablequicknessthatitisscarcelywonderfultohearofcertainreligioussectswho,wheneverythingisprosperingmorethanusuallywellwiththem,makehastetoputongarmentsofsackcloth,andcastashesontheirheads,prayingaloud"Prepareus,OLord,fortheevildayswhichareathand!"ThemoderationoftheStoics,whoconsidereditimpiouseithertorejoiceorgrieve,andstrovetomaintainanequablemiddlecoursebetweentheopposingelementsofsorrowandjoy,withoutallowingthemselvestobeledawaybyover-muchdelightorover-muchmelancholy,wassurelyawisehabitoftemperament.I,wholivedmiserablyasfarasmyinnerandbetterconsciousnesswasconcerned,wasyetoutwardlysatisfiedwiththematerialthingsoflifeandtheluxuriessurroundingme—andIbegantotakecomfortinthesethings,andwiththemendeavouredtoquellandignoremymoresubtlegriefs,succeedingsofarinthatIbecamemoreandmoreofathoroughmaterialisteveryday,lovingbodilyease,appetizingfood,costlywine,andpersonalindulgencetoadegreethatrobbedmegraduallyofeventhedesireformentaleffort.
