Thereareafewtruly‘greatladies’left,whosemaximisstill‘noblesseoblige,’—buttheyarequiteintheminorityandbytheyoungergenerationarevotedeither‘oldcats’or‘bores.’Manyofthe‘cultured’mobthatnowswarmedovermygroundshadcomeoutofthesheerestvulgarcuriositytoseewhat‘themanwithfivemillions’coulddointhewayofentertaining—otherswereanxioustogetnews,ifpossible,ofthechancesof‘Phosphor’winningtheDerby,concerningwhichIwasdiscreetlysilent.Butthebulkofthecrowdwanderedaimlesslyabout,staringimpertinentlyorenviouslyateachother,andscarcelylookingatthenaturallovelinessofthegardensorthewoodlandsceneryaroundthem.Thebrainlessnessofmodernsocietyisneversoflagrantlymanifestedasatagarden-party,wheretherestlesstrouseredandpetticoatedbipedsmovevaguelytoandfro,scarcelystoppingtotalkcivillyorintelligentlytooneanotherforfiveminutes,mostofthemhoveringdubiouslyandawkwardlybetweentherefreshment-pavilionandtheband-stand.Inmydomaintheyweredeprivedofthislatterharbourofrefuge,fornomusicianscouldbeseen,thoughmusicwasheard—beautifulwildmusicwhichcamefirstfromonepartofthegroundsandthenfromanother,andtowhichfewlistenedwithanyattention.Allwere,however,happilyunanimousintheirenthusiasticappreciationoftheexcellenceofthefoodprovidedforthemintheluxuriousluncheontentsofwhichthereweretwentyinnumber.
