           Hehadaccomplishedhisduty,andaheroicdutytoo.Theconsciousnessofthisfilledhimwithhappiness;helockedhimselfinhisroom,andabandonedhimselfwithquiteanewpleasuretoreadingexploitsofhishero.

           Whenthebreakfastbellsounded,thereadingoftheBulletinsoftheGreatArmyhadmadehimforgetallhisadvantagesofthepreviousday.Hesaidtohimselfflippantly,ashewentdowntothesalon,"ImusttellthatwomanthatIaminlovewithher."Insteadofthoselooksbrimfulofpleasurewhichhewasexpectingtomeet,hefoundthesternvisageofM.deRênal,whohadarrivedfromVerrièrestwohoursago,anddidnotconcealhisdissatisfactionatJulien’shavingpassedthewholemorningwithoutattendingtothechildren.Nothingcouldhavebeenmoresordidthanthisself-importantmanwhenhewasinabadtemperandthoughtthathecouldsafelyshowit.
