ItshouldbementionedthatthecuréofVerrières,anoldmanofninety,whoowedtothebracingmountainairanironconstitutionandanironcharacter,hadtherighttovisittheprison,thehospitalandtheworkhouseatanyhour.Ithadbeenatpreciselysixo’clockinthemorningthatM.Appert,whohadaParisrecommendationtothecuré,hadbeenshrewdenoughtoarriveatalittleinquisitivetown.Hehadimmediatelygoneontothecuré’shouse.
ThecuréChélanbecamepensiveashereadtheletterwrittentohimbytheM.leMarquisdeLaMole,PeerofFrance,andtherichestlandedproprietoroftheprovince.
"Iamoldandbelovedhere,"hesaidtohimselfinawhisper,"theywouldnotdare!"ThenhesuddenlyturnedtothegentlemanfromParis,witheyes,whichinspiteofhisgreatage,shonewiththatsacredfirewhichbetokensthedelightofdoingafinebutslightlydangerousact.
