Proudmanthathewas,themayorhadnonethelesstonegotiatewiththattough,stubbornpeasant,oldSorel.Hehadtopayhimingoodsolidgoldenlouisbeforehecouldinducehimtotransferhisworkshopelsewhere.Astothepublicstreamwhichsuppliedthemotivepowerforthesaw-mill,M.deRênalobtaineditsdiversion,thankstotheinfluencewhichheenjoyedatParis.Thisfavourwasaccordedhimaftertheelectionof182-.
HegaveSorelfouracresforeveryonehehadpreviouslyheld,fivehundredyardslowerdownonthebanksoftheDoubs.Althoughthispositionwasmuchmoreadvantageousforhispine-planktrade,fatherSorel(asheiscalledsincehehasbecomerich)knewhowtoexploittheimpatienceandmaniaforlandedownershipwhichanimatedhisneighbourtothetuneofsixthousandfrancs.
Itistruethatthisarrangementwascriticisedbythewiseacresofthelocality.Oneday,itwasonaSundayfouryearslater,asM.deRênalwascomingbackfromchurchinhismayor’suniform,hesawoldSorelsmilingathim,ashestaredathimsomedistanceawaysurroundedbyhisthreesons
