           Julienthoughtthathehaddiscoveredonehonestmaninthewhirlpoolofthisnovelworld.HewasageometristnamedGros,andhadthereputationofbeingaJacobin.Julien,whohadvowedtosaynothingbutthatwhichhedisbelievedhimself,wasobligedtowatchhimselfcarefullywhenspeakingtoM.Gros.HereceivedbigpacketsofexercisesfromVergy.Hewasadvisedtovisithisfatherfrequently,andhefulfilledhisunpleasantduty.Inawordhewaspatchinghisreputationtogetherprettywell,whenhewasthoroughlysurprisedtofindhimselfwokenuponemorningbytwohandsheldoverhiseyes.
