Whileallhisshipwasgettingdrunkasfastasitcould,heremainedsober.Notadropofliquorpassedhislips.Hedidnotdareitunderthecircumstances,forhehadonlyLouisandmetodependupon,andLouiswasevennowatthewheel.Weweresailingonthroughthefogwithoutalook-outandwithoutlights.ThatWolfLarsenhadturnedtheliquorlooseamonghismensurprisedme,butheevidentlyknewtheirpsychologyandthebestmethodofcementingincordiality,whathadbeguninbloodshed.
HisvictoryoverDeathLarsenseemedtohavehadaremarkableeffectuponhim.Thepreviouseveninghehadreasonedhimselfintotheblues,andIhadbeenwaitingmomentarilyforoneofhischaracteristicoutbursts.Yetnothinghadoccurred,andhewasnowinsplendidtrim.Possiblyhissuccessincapturingsomanyhuntersandboatshadcounteractedthecustomaryreaction.Atanyrate,thebluesweregone,andthebluedevilshadnotputinanappearance.SoIthoughtatthetime;but,ahme,littleIknewhimorknewthateventhen,perhaps,hewasmeditatinganoutbreakmoreterriblethananyIhadseen.
AsIsay,hediscoveredhimselfinsplendidtrimwhenIenteredthecabin.Hehadhadnoheadachesforweeks,hiseyeswereclearblueasthesky,hisbronzewasbeautifulwithperfecthealth;lifeswelledthroughhisveinsinfullandmagnificentflood.WhilewaitingformehehadengagedMaudinanimateddiscussion.
