           WhenIreturnedondeckIfoundWolfLarsensteeringmainlywithonehand,whilewiththeotherhandheheldthemarineglassesandstudiedthesituationoftheboats,payingparticularattentiontothepositionoftheMacedonia.Theonlychangenoticeableinourboatswasthattheyhadhauledcloseonthewindandwereheadingseveralpointswestofnorth.Still,Icouldnotseetheexpediencyofthemanoeuvre,forthefreeseawasstillinterceptedbytheMacedonia’sfiveweatherboats,which,inturn,hadhauledcloseonthewind.Thustheyslowlydivergedtowardthewest,drawingfartherawayfromtheremainderoftheboatsintheirline.Ourboatswererowingaswellassailing.Eventhehunterswerepulling,andwiththreepairsofoarsinthewatertheyrapidlyoverhauledwhatImayappropriatelytermtheenemy.

           ThesmokeoftheMacedoniahaddwindledtoadimblotonthenorth-easternhorizon.Ofthesteamerherselfnothingwastobeseen.Wehadbeenloafingalong,tillnow,oursailsshakinghalfthetimeandspillingthewind;andtwice,forshortperiods,wehadbeenhoveto.Buttherewasnomoreloafing.Sheetsweretrimmed,andWolfLarsenproceededtoputtheGhostthroughherpaces.Weranpastourlineofboatsandboredownuponthefirstweatherboatoftheotherline.

           Iranforwardandhadthedownhauloftheflyingjiballinandfastasweslippedbytheboatahundredfeettoleeward.Thethreemeninitgazedatussuspiciously.
