           Thesoundofblowsandscufflingcametoourears.Bothmenwerewounded,andhewasthrashingthembothforhavingdisobeyedhisordersandcrippledthemselvesinadvanceofthehuntingseason.Infact,theywerebadlywounded,and,havingthrashedthem,heproceededtooperateupontheminaroughsurgicalfashionandtodresstheirwounds.Iservedasassistantwhileheprobedandcleansedthepassagesmadebythebullets,andIsawthetwomenendurehiscrudesurgerywithoutanaestheticsandwithnomoretoupholdthemthanastifftumblerofwhisky.

           Asformyself,Iwasoppressedwithnightmare.Thedayhadbeenlikesomehorribledream.Brutalityhadfollowedbrutality,andflamingpassionsandcold-bloodedcrueltyhaddrivenmentoseekoneanother’slives,andtostrivetohurt,andmaim,anddestroy.Mynerveswereshocked.Myminditselfwasshocked.
