Theytraveledforthemostpartupontheground,whereitwasopen,followingthepathofthegreatelephantswhosecomingsandgoingsbreaktheonlyroadsthroughthosetangledmazesofbush,vine,creeper,andtree.Whentheywalkeditwaswitharolling,awkwardmotion,placingtheknucklesoftheirclosedhandsuponthegroundandswingingtheirungainlybodiesforward.
Butwhenthewaywasthroughthelowertreestheymovedmoreswiftly,swingingfrombranchtobranchwiththeagilityoftheirsmallercousins,themonkeys.AndallthewayKalacarriedherlittledeadbabyhuggedcloselytoherbreast.
ItwasshortlyafternoonwhentheyreachedaridgeoverlookingthebeachwherebelowthemlaythetinycottagewhichwasKerchak’sgoal.
Hehadseenmanyofhiskindgototheirdeathsbeforetheloudnoisemadebythelittleblackstickinthehandsofthestrangewhiteapewholivedinthatwonderfullair,andKerchakhadmadeuphisbrutemindtoownthatdeath-dealingcontrivance,andtoexploretheinteriorofthemysteriousden.
