Butshewasstillanape,ahuge,fierce,terriblebeastofaspeciescloselyalliedtothegorilla,yetmoreintelligent;which,withthestrengthoftheircousin,madeherkindthemostfearsomeofthoseawe-inspiringprogenitorsofman.
WhenthetribesawthatKerchak’sragehadceasedtheycameslowlydownfromtheirarborealretreatsandpursuedagainthevariousoccupationswhichhehadinterrupted.
Theyoungplayedandfrolickedaboutamongthetreesandbushes.Someoftheadultslayproneuponthesoftmatofdeadanddecayingvegetationwhichcoveredtheground,whileothersturnedoverpiecesoffallenbranchesandclodsofearthinsearchofthesmallbugsandreptileswhichformedapartoftheirfood.
