Man’s Reason

           TherewasoneofthetribeofTarzanwhoquestionedhisauthority,andthatwasTerkoz,thesonofTublat,buthesofearedthekeenknifeandthedeadlyarrowsofhisnewlordthatheconfinedthemanifestationofhisobjectionstopettydisobediencesandirritatingmannerisms;Tarzanknew,however,thathebutwaitedhisopportunitytowrestthekingshipfromhimbysomesuddenstrokeoftreachery,andsohewaseveronhisguardagainstsurprise.

           Formonthsthelifeofthelittlebandwentonmuchasithadbefore,exceptthatTarzan’sgreaterintelligenceandhisabilityasahunterwerethemeansofprovidingforthemmorebountifullythaneverbefore.Mostofthem,therefore,weremorethancontentwiththechangeinrulers.

           Tarzanledthembynighttothefieldsoftheblackmen,andthere,warnedbytheirchief’ssuperiorwisdom,theyateonlywhattheyrequired,noreverdidtheydestroywhattheycouldnoteat,asisthewayofManu,themonkey,andofmostapes.

           So,whiletheblackswerewrothatthecontinuedpilferingoftheirfields,theywerenotdiscouragedintheireffortstocultivatetheland,aswouldhavebeenthecasehadTarzanpermittedhispeopletolaywastetheplantationwantonly.

           DuringthisperiodTarzanpaidmanynocturnalvisitstothevillage,whereheoftenrenewedhissupplyofarrows.
