Theapewasstaggered,andwhatwiththemortalwoundinhissidehadalmostcollapsed,when,withonemightyeffortheralliedforaninstant—justlongenoughtoenablehimtowresthisarmfreefromTarzan’sgraspandcloseinaterrificclinchwithhiswiryopponent.
Strainingtheape-manclosetohim,hisgreatjawssoughtTarzan’sthroat,buttheyounglord’ssinewyfingerswereatKerchak’sownbeforethecruelfangscouldcloseonthesleekbrownskin.
Thustheystruggled,theonetocrushouthisopponent’slifewiththoseawfulteeth,theothertocloseforeverthewindpipebeneathhisstronggraspwhileheheldthesnarlingmouthfromhim.
Thegreaterstrengthoftheapewasslowlyprevailing,andtheteethofthestrainingbeastwerescarceaninchfromTarzan’sthroatwhen,withashudderingtremor,thegreatbodystiffenedforaninstantandthensanklimplytotheground.
Kerchakwasdead.
Withdrawingtheknifethathadsooftenrenderedhimmasteroffarmightiermusclesthanhisown,TarzanoftheApesplacedhisfootupontheneckofhisvanquishedenemy,andonceagain,loudthroughtheforestrangthefierce,wildcryoftheconqueror.
