Chapter 11. The Nautilus

           "Sir,"saidCaptainNemo,showingmetheinstrumentshangingonthewallsofhisroom,"herearethecontrivancesrequiredforthenavigationoftheNautilus.Here,asinthedrawing-room,Ihavethemalwaysundermyeyes,andtheyindicatemypositionandexactdirectioninthemiddleoftheocean.Someareknowntoyou,suchasthethermometer,whichgivestheinternaltemperatureoftheNautilus;thebarometer,whichindicatestheweightoftheairandforetellsthechangesoftheweather;thehygrometer,whichmarksthedrynessoftheatmosphere;thestorm-glass,thecontentsofwhich,bydecomposing,announcetheapproachoftempests;thecompass,whichguidesmycourse;thesextant,whichshowsthelatitudebythealtitudeofthesun;chronometers,bywhichIcalculatethelongitude;andglassesfordayandnight,whichIusetoexaminethepointsofthehorizon,whentheNautilusrisestothesurfaceofthewaves."

           "Thesearetheusualnauticalinstruments,"Ireplied,"andIknowtheuseofthem.Buttheseothers,nodoubt,answertotheparticularrequirementsoftheNautilus.Thisdialwithmovableneedleisamanometer,isitnot?"

           "Itisactuallyamanometer.Butbycommunicationwiththewater,whoseexternalpressureitindicates,itgivesourdepthatthesametime."

           "Andtheseotherinstruments,theuseofwhichIcannotguess?"

           "Here,Professor,Ioughttogiveyousomeexplanations.Willyoubekindenoughtolistentome?"

           Hewassilentforafewmoments,thenhesaid:
