           Thesegracefulmolluscsmovedbackwardsbymeansoftheirlocomotivetube,throughwhichtheypropelledthewateralreadydrawnin.Oftheireighttentacles,sixwereelongated,andstretchedoutfloatingonthewater,whilsttheothertwo,rolledupflat,werespreadtothewinglikealightsail.Isawtheirspiral-shapedandflutedshells,whichCuvierjustlycomparestoanelegantskiff.Aboatindeed!Itbearsthecreaturewhichsecretesitwithoutitsadheringtoit.

           FornearlyanhourtheNautilusfloatedinthemidstofthisshoalofmolluscs.ThenIknownotwhatsuddenfrighttheytook.Butasifatasignaleverysailwasfurled,thearmsfolded,thebodydrawnin,theshellsturnedover,changingtheircentreofgravity,andthewholefleetdisappearedunderthewaves.Neverdidtheshipsofasquadronmanoeuvrewithmoreunity.

           Atthatmomentnightfellsuddenly,andthereeds,scarcelyraisedbythebreeze,laypeaceablyunderthesidesoftheNautilus.

           Thenextday,26thofJanuary,wecuttheequatorattheeighty-secondmeridianandenteredthenorthernhemisphere.Duringthedayaformidabletroopofsharksaccompaniedus,terriblecreatures,whichmultiplyintheseseasandmakethemverydangerous.
