           Astothefish,theyalwaysprovokedouradmirationwhenwesurprisedthesecretsoftheiraquaticlifethroughtheopenpanels.IsawmanykindswhichIneverbeforehadachanceofobserving.

           Fromthe21sttothe23rdofJanuarytheNautiluswentattherateoftwohundredandfiftyleaguesintwenty-fourhours,beingfivehundredandfortymiles,ortwenty-twomilesanhour.Ifwerecognisedsomanydifferentvarietiesoffish,itwasbecause,attractedbytheelectriclight,theytriedtofollowus;thegreaterpart,however,weresoondistancedbyourspeed,thoughsomekepttheirplaceinthewatersoftheNautilusforatime.
