October20.—Ioversetmyraft,andallthegoodsIhadgotuponit; butbeinginshoalwater,andthethingsbeingchieflyheavy,Irecoveredmanyofthemwhenthetidewasout.
October25. —Itrainedallnightandallday,withsomegustsofwind,duringwhichtimetheshipbrokeinpieces,thewindblowingalittleharderthanbefore,andwasnomoretobeseen,exceptthewreckofher,andthatonlyatlowwater. IspentthisdayincoveringandsecuringthegoodswhichIhadsaved,thattherainmightnotspoilthem.
October26. —Iwalkedabouttheshorealmostalldaytofindoutaplacetofixmyhabitation,greatlyconcernedtosecuremyselffromanattackinthenight,eitherfromwildbeastsormen. TowardsnightIfixeduponaproperplaceunderarock,andmarkedoutasemicircleformyencampment,whichIresolvedtostrengthenwithawork,wall,orfortificationmadeofdoublepiles,linedwithinwithcables,andwithoutwithturf.
Fromthe26thtothe30thIworkedveryhardincarryingallmygoodstomynewhabitation,thoughsomepartofthetimeitrainedexceedinghard.
The31st,inthemorning,Iwentoutintotheislandwithmyguntoseeforsomefood,anddiscoverthecountry; whenIkilledashe-goat,andherkidfollowedmehome,whichIafterwardskilledalso,becauseitwouldnotfeed.
