Whenthiscargoarrived,Ithoughtmyfortunemade,forIwassurprisedwithjoyofit; andmygoodsteward,thecaptain,hadlaidoutthefivepounds,whichmyfriendhadsenthimforapresentforhimself,topurchaseandbringmeoveraservantunderbondforsixyears’service, andwouldnotacceptofanyconsideration,exceptalittletobacco,whichIwouldhavehimaccept,beingofmyownproduce.
Neitherwasthisall; butmygoodsbeingallEnglishmanufacturessuchascloth,stuffs,baise,andthingsparticularlyvaluableanddesirableinthecountry,Ifoundmeanstosellthemtoaverygreatadvantage; sothatImaysayIhadmorethanfourtimesthevalueofmyfirstcargo,andwasnowinfinitelybeyondmypoorneighbor,Imeanintheadvancementofmyplantation; forthefirstthingIdid,Iboughtmeanegroslave,andaEuropeanservantalso;ImeananotherbesidesthatwhichthecaptainbroughtmefromLisbon.
