Butsincehumanaffairsareallsubjecttochangesanddisasters,Iwouldhaveyougiveordersbutforonehundredpoundssterling,which,yousay,ishalfyourstock,andletthehazardberunforthefirst; sothatifitcomesafe,youmayordertherestthesameway; andifitmiscarry,youmayhavetheotherhalftohaverecoursetoforyoursupply."
Thiswassowholesomeadvice,andlookedsofriendly,thatIcouldnotbutbeconvinceditwasthebestcourseIcouldtake; soIaccordinglypreparedletterstothegentlewomanwithwhomIleftmymoney,andaprocurationtothePortuguesecaptain,ashedesired.
